Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
The high point of my year used to be a train journey which took us from Wales to the South via the Black Country – which to a country boy like me was by far the best part. Chimneys, rust, canals, cooling towers, cranes, locomotives, ‘northlight’ roofs and streams running slowly and sickly, oxide-red. I loved these panoramas viewed from a train, especally under a grey sky.
On a sunny day some time in 1967 or earlier, we passed Bilston Steelworks slowly. There was some kind of emergency there, with several fire-engines in attendance. Anybody know what had happened?
Nick’s photographs are treasures. He is fond of the people that others choose not to celebrate. Bankers are fooled by their money into thinking they matter more. In the last analysis, they do not.
